I am always looking for new ways to keep my students and myself healthy and germ-free, but I also am concerned with the types of products I keep my in classroom. Many of the students at my school have sensory integration disorders or otherwise can be very sen

sitive to chemicals. I know that there is a commitment to natural and organic foods and products in many of my students’ homes, and I want to respect that with the materials and products I use in my classroom. Prefense is a product I know I can trust for use with my students, but it also beats the usual hand sanitizers found in schools and other public places.

Prefense is an alcohol-free sanitizer that kills bacteria, viruses and fungi for 24 hours or through 10 washings, and it does this with one application. Simply pump Prefense into your hands and work the foam through your fingers and palms, and you have protection that lasts all day. The product is easy to use and is not harsh smelling or feeling. The scent is natural, and comes from essential oil fragrances.

I received the Fresh Citrus Prefense, and I do want to warn, the scent is more reminiscent of a few different scents than I expected. The citrus is definitely there, but what would make me describe this as fresh is something that might be more like a ginger or a lemongrass. The first whiff I got made me think of Asian cuisine. This might be a definite turn off to some, but the scent isn’t long lasting, so if you can get through the initial aroma, you can be fine. It also beats smelling chemicals or the sharpness of alcohol, and so I wouldn’t say that the first bit of scent diminishes this product at all. My hands also do not feel sticky or dried out the way hand sanitizers often make my hands feel. I like that this is foam, because it’s easy to work through my hands and it won’t drip and slime like some of the looser gel sanitizers.

The packaging is also a plus. There is a cap that really protects the pump from a exposure to germs and it allows you to keep the product in your purse or car without fear of a spill. The pump gives just the right amount of foam, and the product doesn’t drip down out of the pump as you release the pressure of your finger. Kids can easily get this product themselves, or a parent can very neatly and quickly pump some foam into little hands and be confident that there will not be a mess.

Overall, I would recommend Prefense to anyone who is concerned with fighting germs and doing so with more natural ingredients. In the cases of strong allergies to essential botanicals or sensitivity to scents, I’d suggest caution before using this product. However, if these are not an issue, the all day protection of such a quality sanitizer cannot be beaten.
